June 10, 2006 – From Brisbane via New Caledonia to Fiji

We have started the pacific crossing and yesterday Johan and I arrived to Fiji after a close to 7 hour long flight from New Caledonia. The DA42 shines in these environments and it is rather fascinating that we were able to take off from New Caledonia, go south for a 1 hour scenic flight over the Loyalty Province and Isle des Pines then fly 760 nautical miles to Nasouri at the east coast of Fiji’s main island NNNN NNNN and then – still without refueling - take off again and fly the 70 nautical miles to Nadi at the west coast of Fiji. One of the highs was the flight over the Isle des Pines where we had the opportunity to fly at a low altitude in uncontrolled airspace. It was just stunning.

Before Fiji we spent one day in New Caledonia. NC formally belongs to France and the language and culture is strongly influenced by France although the province now has its own government and currency. NC played an important role during WW2 where the US military used the island as a hub for its operations in the Pacific region. More than 2 million soldiers were based or routed through New Caledonia. What’s also interesting about this place is that the land is unlike all other islands in the South Pacific not a volcanic island but New Caledonia is actually a piece of the Australian continent that was separated from the main land of Australia some 100 million years ago.
